Eluceda, a U.K.-based biotechnical company, has developed a new rapid hydrogen peroxide test, providing results in 60 seconds.
According to the company, the new test is capable of detecting the presence of hydrogen peroxide detection water with concentrations between 1 and 1,000 parts per million.
Eluceda said the device was developed after a top paper and pulp supplier reached out to the company about creating a test that is easy to repeat.
The Eluceda solution utilizes its E-Sens handheld detectors in combination with specialist electrochemical sensors to provide a simple "dip and read’" approach.
“As a science- and technology-led business, we’re always excited when are able to use our collective expertise to devise a novel solution to a particular problem an industry is experiencing," Eluceda Chief Technology Officer Ian Eastwood said. “We are proud of what we’ve been able to achieve with our hydrogen peroxide test, both in terms of the technical achievement and effectiveness of it in driving efficiencies and reducing waste in the manufacturing process.”
The new technology has applications for the aquaculture and fish-farming industries, which use hydrogen peroxide to combat sea lice. The FDA approved the use of hydrogen peroxide in aquaculture in 2007, and the product can be used to reduce mortality in freshwater-reared finfish eggs, freshwater-reared salmonids, and as a method of combating bacteria and mold. As with any chemical, dosage levels are important, and knowing the level of hydrogen peroxide present in water can aid with treatment effectiveness, Eastwood said.
“While this is a specific industry application, our detection technology can be used across many different sectors and different compounds, and we’re excited to build the next development for our, quick, cost-effective and portable testing solutions,” Eastwood said.
