China announced on 11 September that it would be exempting certain products imported from the United States from tariffs for the first time.
Starting on 17 September, and running until 16 September, 2020, 16 U.S. goods will have additional import tariffs waived. Included among those goods are fish meal for feed – listed under HS code 23012010 – and “other shrimp and shrimp seedlings,” listed under 03063610.
In addition, according to an announcement from China’s Ministry of Finance, tariffs already imposed on fish meal and shrimp broodstock “shall be refunded.” Companies in China that paid the tariffs have six months to apply for a refund and exclusion from the tariffs.
The announcement is the first time that any goods from the U.S. have been exempted from tariffs, and comes soon after Trump escalated the trade war between the two countries by increasing tariffs on USD 550 billion (EUR 499.6 billion) worth of goods.
The announcement also comes before the next round of talks between officials of the two countries, scheduled to take place in Washington, D.C. in the coming weeks.
