Chinese aquafeed firm uses training to secure sales in Southeast Asia, India

Growth opportunities in developing countries are being secured through training programs delivered by a major Chinese vendor of aquaculture feed and health products.

Guangdong Nutriera Group (which also uses the Mandarin name “Lia Kun”) recently hosted 21 aquaculture officials and executives from six countries recently at its facilities in Fujian Province.

Among the countries represented was Bangladesh and Myanmar – both sent government officials and aquaculture practitioners – with participants’ costs for the trip sponsored by China’s Ministry of Commerce.

Nutriera staff, meanwhile, were in India recently to address academics and aquaculture professionals in the state of Andhra Pradesh. Nutriera staff delivered training on nutrition for snakehead fish and pangasius, as production of the two species has started to take off in the region.

China’s feed producers have looked to both Southeast and South Asia as a source of growth, while both regions have also become major supply points for China’s seafood needs. Key Chinese players Guangdong Haid and the Tongwei Group both have aquafeed plants across the two regions. India grew its shrimp shipments to China by 546 percent year on year in 2018, to 12,463 tons.

This trend looks set to continue long term, with lower-cost Asian countries increasingly functioning as satellite economies to a wealthier China. To reduce tariffs, Beijing has orchestrated a Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership with 16 countries, including India, Japan, and Vietnam.

Exports of labor-intensive manufactured goods from China fell 3.1 percent over the past decade, according to data compiled by McKinsey. Exports of labor-intensive manufactured goods rose 15 percent out of Vietnam in the same timeframe, while exports from Bangladesh and India rose 7 percent and 8 percent, respectively.
