India’s June shrimp export value rises from May

India earned more value from its shrimp exports in June compared with May, but sales declined year-on-year, according to the latest data released by India’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

Exports in June were worth USD 401.3 million (EUR 341.4 million), increasing 15.3 percent from May, but falling 5.2 percent from the same month last year.

The export value from the U.S. and Japan all grew in the month, while the sales to China and Vietnam went down.

Of the export total, USD 205.11 million (EUR 174.5 million) worth of shrimp was sent to the U.S., soaring 56.4 percent from May, and up 1.2 percent year-on-year. That increase was contrasted by the USD 60.54 million (EUR 51.5 million) worth of shrimp was shipped to China, a decrease of 35.4 percent month-on-month and 33.8 percent year-on-year.

Indian shrimp exporters last month expressed concern after encountering difficulties in sending shipments to China amid a political standoff between the two countries related to a border dispute. There was a noted slowdown in customs clearance in Chinese ports for shrimp shipments from India. The average checking time has gone from three to 10 days, making Chinese buyers hesitant.

In June, India earned USD 49.39 million (EUR 42 million) from shipping shrimp to Japan, up 55.4 percent from May, and jumping 37.4 percent from the same period last year.

The country also earned USD 14.38 million (EUR 12.2 million) from the exports of shrimp to Vietnam, down 21 percent from May, and contracting 10.6 percent compared with June 2019.

Between January and June, India shipped shrimp worth USD 1.82 billion (EUR 1.55 billion), down 9 percent year-on-year. The sales for the year declined in the biggest two buyers: the U.S. and China. Exports to the U.S. have been worth USD 861.6 million (EUR 733 million), down 9.6 percent from the first half of 2019; while exports to china have been wroth USD 321.44 million (EUR 273.5 million), 10.4 percent lower year-on-year.

Notably, India’s exports to Japan increased over the first six months, reaching USD 130.1 million (EUR 110.7 million) in value, up 15.1 percent year-on-year.

However, the value of India's shrimp exports to Vietnam in the period dived 26.2 percent year-on-year to USD 84.5 million (EUR 72 million).
