OBI Seafoods and Trident Seafoods landed the majority of a United States government contract worth USD 12.4 million (EUR 10.2 million) to supply canned pink salmon.
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is purchasing 182,400 cases of the salmon, which will be used for child nutrition and other domestic assistance programs next year.
Seattle, Washington-based OBI Seafoods LLC – formed from a merger between Ocean Beauty and Cooke’s Icicle Seafoods earlier this year – snagged the majority of the contract at around USD 6.5 million (EUR 5.3 million).
Seattle, Washington-based Trident also snared a significant USD 5.3 million (4.4 million) of the contract, and Bellevue, Washington-based Peter Pan Seafoods was awarded nearly USD 541,000 (EUR 444,000).
However, the USDA did not award 25,840 pounds worth of the contract due to vendor constraints, the agency said in the award notice.
In June, Trident, Ocean Beauty, and Peter Pan also landed significant contracts for canned pink salmon and frozen pollock from the USDA for the second half of 2020.
The agency purchased USD 23.8 million (EUR 20 million) worth of canned salmon and frozen pollock from the three suppliers.
