The U.S. Department of Agriculture will seek to buy more canned salmon as part of the U.S. government’s Build Back Better Initiative.
USDA has asked suppliers to bid on 302,480 cases of domestic canned red salmon, as part of U.S. President Joe Biden’s plan to extend free family food aid distributed through the U.S. public schools system. The salmon will be used in the National School Lunch Program and other Federal Food and Nutrition Assistance Programs, the USDA said in a notice.
Bids are due by 14 December, and the winning suppliers will make deliveries to several U.S. cities between February and July 2022.
The USDA already awarded hefty contracts to supply canned pink salmon in November 2021.
OBI Seafoods won the majority of the USDA’s canned pink salmon contract, worth a total USD 5.87 million (EUR 5.2 million). OBI will supply around USD 4.9 million (EUR 4.3 million) worth of the salmon, while Trident won nearly USD 495,000 (EUR 440,000) worth.
OBI and Trident will deliver salmon between January and August 2022.
