Aker BioMarine adds krill vessel to fleet

Aker Biomarine has added another vessel to its fleet to meet growing demand for its krill products.

The krill f/v Thorsovdi was bought by Aker Biomarine from Norway’s Krillsea Group and has been renamed Antarctic Sea. It will undergo an intensive renovation before heading south to the Antarctic next season.

Like the other ships in its krill fleet, the f/v Antarctic Sea will be outfitted with Aker BioMarine’s patented Eco Harvesting technology that eliminates all bycatch.??

“This new acquisition demonstrates that we are in the krill fishery for the long term,” said the company. “Like all other vessels that we have in the krill fishery, beside using the most advanced, eco-friendly fishing system available, Antarctic Sea will have an independent observer on board to verify our no-bycatch policy.”

Aker Biomarine’s Antarctic fisheries are the only krill fisheries to be awarded Marine Stewardship Council certification. In addition, although this is not a requirement, Aker BioMarine maintains a policy of having independent observers on all ships and is the only krill company to do so. ??To aid researchers, Aker BioMarine supports scientists studying krill and the f/v Antarctic Sea will participate in the company’s scientific program.
