Australian bluefin supplier signs deal with Chinese e-commerce, air carrier

Australian firm Beston Global Food has teamed up with online retailer JD.com and Hainan Airlines to fly bluefin tuna into China.

“We want to bring the best of Australian luxury food resources to Chinese consumers,” said Wang Xiao Song, head of fresh foods at Jingdong, which operates the JD.com e-commerce site in China.

Wang spoke after signing a “strategic cooperation” agreement in Beijing with executives from Beston and the cold-chain cargo wing of Hainan Airlines, one of China’s leading carriers.

Beston – which exports Australian dairy, meat and seafood to China – bought bluefin producer Mori Seafoods two years ago. It also imports southern rock lobsters into China under its Ferguson Australia subsidiary. A statement from JD.com announcing the partnership didn’t announce details or sales targets, but used marketing points which have become clichés of Chinese seafood importers: the endangered bluefin tuna is from “very deep, pure and cold seas…the meat is delicious and healthy.”
