Canadians urged to eat more lobster

Canada’s fifth largest bank on Tuesday encouraged Canadians to make lobster part of their New Year’s festivities to support the country’s ailing lobster fishery.

“I encourage everyone to bring more lobster home. There’s no better way to enjoy New Year’s Eve than to have lobster,” said Paul Seipp, commercial banking area manager for Bank of Montreal. “Prices have collapsed to a near 20-year low, and Canadian [lobstermen] need your support. You’ll be having a treat and helping out your fellow Canadians at the same time.”

Earlier this month, Bank of Montreal provided Lennox Island First Nation of Prince Edward Island with funding to establish Minigoo Fisheries, Atlantic Canada’s first lobster processor wholly owned by a First Nation.

“Many of our employees live and work in the community and have seen first-hand the effect the current downturn in the lobster fishery is having on neighbors, friends and family,” said Seipp. “We understand what they are going through.”
