Chinese fishermen line up for payoff to quit sector

A survey of fishermen in a leading Chinese port has shown that 70 percent of vessels owners would be willing to accept compensation and quit fishing.

The Da Peng port, a subdistrict of the huge city of Shenzhen, is following up on the survey by offering vessel owners CNY 8,000 (USD 1,205, EUR 1,026) per kilowatt hour in a bid to shrink the fleet fishing domestic waters.

The scheme, titled “Jian Chuan Zhuan Chan” [“Reduce Boats, Change Industry”], aims to shrink the fleet from 905 to 560, according to government documents.

Fishermen are keen to sign onto the scheme this year as the CNY 8,000/kwh figure will slide to CNY 7,000 (USD 1,054, EUR 897) per kwh in 2018 and CNY 6,000 (USD 903, EUR 769) per kwh in 2019.

The Da Peng district, meanwhile, is also spending on a “coral protection project” in a bid to rejuvenate local corals.
