Editor’s note: The following article from the Times-Picayune contained an error. The correct name of the company cited in the article is Doran Seafood, not Doran Sea-Pak Seafood as previously reported. The company’s name was officially changed in July 2009 after it was determined that its use of “Sea-Pak” was a trademark infringement on Rich Products Corp.’s retail brand. Rick Products has never been affiliated with Doran Seafood, before or after the name change.
A Tangipahoa Parish seafood processing company in Louisiana and an Illinois-based seafood distributor on Tuesday were charged in federal court in New Orleans with mislabeling shrimp caught in Mexico as U.S. shrimp and commercially selling more than USD 100,000 worth of it in interstate commerce.
Between 15 November 2007 and 4 December 2008, the Worldwide Shrimp Co. of Highland Park, Ill., allegedly sent the Mexican-caught shrimp to Doran LLC of 136 E. Railroad Ave., Independence. Doran Sea-Pak processed and packaged it, affixing the false U.S. labels of origin, according to court filings.
