EU, Cape Verde renew fishing agreement

Officials from the EU and Cape Verde have agreed to renew the protocol attached to the fisheries partnership agreement, allowing EU vessels to continue fishing in Cape Verde waters.

The four-year protocol replaces the current protocol, which expires on 31 August 2014. According to the agreement, 71 EU vessels will be able to fish for tuna and other migratory species. The EU will pay Cape Verde EUR 550,000 (USD ) per year for the first two years, and EUR 500,000 (USD ) per year for the final two years in exchange for the fishing rights. The money is expected to pay for projects that promote sustainable fisheries management, along with supporting local fishing communities.

Among the EU member states, fisheries in Spain, Portugal and France are expected to have the most interest in the fishing grounds.
