Icelandic seafood company HB Grandi will cease its groundfish processing operations in the port town of Akranes with effect from 1 September. The move was confirmed at a meeting with employee and union representatives.
The company will merge its Akranes groundfish processing operations with those that it has at its Nordurgardur plant in Reykjavik. It also aims to strengthen its remaining operations in Akranes, which include a pelagic processing plant, a fishmeal plant and subsidiaries Nordanfiskur and Vignir G. Jonsson.
Approximately 270 people are currently employed by HB Grandi in Akranes, including 86 in groundfish processing. Those employees will be invited to apply for other jobs at HB Grandi and its subsidiaries.
“It is hoped that it will be possible to offer all the employees who so wish a suitable job,” the company said.
