Kwik’Pak Fisheries last week debuted its Yukon River salmon in Houston, the first of several U.S. target cities selected to market the fish.
The kick-off event, dubbed “A Taste of the Yukon River,” featured a private dinner that took place at RDG + Bar Annie; four of the five courses featured Yukon River salmon. Guests included Kwik’Pak representatives, Houston-area journalists, researchers, Baylor College of Medicine dietitians and representatives from Central Markets in Texas.
Cooking demonstrations were held the next day at Central Markets’ upscale Houston store, featuring an in-person visit from a Yupik fishing family from Emmonak, who fish on the Lower Yukon River.
Kwik-Pak plans to hold similar events in several U.S. cities this year to introduce the market to the fish and tell the story of the Yupik people. The company has also partnered with global food traceability company Trace Register to help ensure that the trade and consumers purchase genuine Yukon River salmon.
