Norwegian seafood exports set yet another record in March, reaching NOK 4.7 billion (USD 798.8 million, EUR 587.6 million), up NOK 1 billion from the same month last year, according to the Norwegian Seafood Export Council.
As for the first quarter of 2010, Norwegian seafood exports totaled NOK 12.4 billion (USD 2.1 billion, EUR 1.6 billion), up NOK 1.9 billion from the same period last year.
"As a result of continuing very strong market demand for Norwegian seafood, the growth in exports seen last year has continued into the first quarter of this year," said Egil Ove Sundheim, the council's director of market information. "We are seeing record exports of Norwegian salmon, and at the same time sales of clipfish and salted fish are showing growth following a difficult and challenging 2009."
Norwegian salmon exports also set a record last month, topping NOK 6.5 billion (USD 1.1 billion, EUR 812.7 million), up NOK 1.7 billion from March 2009, while the average price of fresh whole salmon jumped to NOK 36.43 (USD 6.19, EUR 4.55) per kilogram, up from NOK 30.36 in March 2009.
Meanwhile, exports of fresh Norwegian cod fillets set a first-quarter record, reaching NOK 167 million (USD 28.4 million, EUR 20.9 million), up NOK 30 million from the first quarter of 2009.
