Ocean Beauty event benefits SeaShare

Ocean Beauty Seafoods on Friday thanked vendors that supported its benefit golf tournament.

The tournament, held at Washington National Golf Club in Auburn, Wash., on 7 August, benefited SeaShare. The Bainbridge Island, Wash., nonprofit is the largest contributor of seafood to America's Second Harvest, the United States' largest hunger-relief organization.

Contributors included Alaska Airlines, American Special Packaging, Apex Cold Storage, Marine Harvest Canada, Northland Services, Silgan Containers, SM Products, Alaska Marine Lines, Carlile Transportation, Lynden Transport, City Ice, Expack Seafood, GCI, Georgia Pacific, Horizon Lines, Icicle Seafoods, Marder Trawling, Miramax Seafoods, Nakamura, Ocean Blue, Qwest and Raw Seafoods.

"Our donors have a shared sense of community and responsibility for the stewardship and efficient utilization of our nation's resources," said Jim Harmon, SeaShare executive director. "In 1993 SeaShare led the effort to amend fishery management regulations in Alaska - the largest fishery in the country - to allow the retention of bycatch solely for use by hunger-relief agencies. It is an important story about a significant source of nutrition - badly needed protein - to help fight hunger. SeaShare's goal isn't just to feed people, but to use seafood to feed people well."
