PEI lobster landings up, value down

Prince Edward Island lobster landings this year are up 5.6 percent over last year but the landed value has actually dropped a whopping CAD 22 million (USD 21.2 million, EUR 15.7 million).

The P.E.I. Department of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development released figures this week showing total landings in 2013 for Prince Edward Island’s three lobster districts combined were 28,768,817 pounds, compared to 27,235,880 pounds last year. The value to the fishermen, however, dropped from CAD 113,756,871 (USD 109.4 million, EUR 81 million) in 2012 to CAD 91,385,246 (USD 88 million, EUR 65 million), according to department calculations.

Landed value for the previous three years were: 2011 — CAD 79,595,000 (USD 76.5 million, EUR 57 million); 2010 — CAD 82,382,000 (USD 79 million, EUR 59 million) and 2009 — CAD 71,895,000 (USD 69 million, EUR 51 million).
