The Peruvian Ministry of Production has authorized a second season for anchovy fishing, with a catch limit of just over 1 million metric tons (MT).
In a statement, the ministry acknowledged the threat of an El Niño changing distribution patterns, but said the latest scientific data indicates stocks are at just over 6 million MT. The total allowable catch for the new season stands at 1.1 million MT.
The season, covering the north central zone, will begin on 17 November, and will last until 31 January 2016, or until the fisheries reach the catch limit. The season only covers anchovy and longnose anchovy.
