Scotland salmon exports to U.S. reach GBP 215 million

For the first time this year, salmon exports from Scotland to the United States reached GBP 215 million (USD 318 million; EUR 300 million). According to numbers released, the farmed salmon sector saw its sales value to the U.S. rise from GBP 155 million (USD 230 million; EUR 216 million) in 2012, an increase of nearly 40 percent.

“Quality and Scottish provenance are key to the American market,” said Scott Landsburgh, chief executive of Scottish Salmon Producers’ Organisation (SSPO). “Major retail chains and high end restaurants are delighted with the salmon we supply from Scotland. The industry has been supported by Scottish Development International (SDI) to open more market opportunities for Scottish salmon, making the USA our largest export market”.

The Scotland salmon sector is planning on meeting buyers from the U.S.’s top retail and food service companies at the international Boston Seafood Expo 15 March through 17 March.

“It’s great to hear that salmon has performed so well on exports in 2014 – this reflects the growing international demand for quality Scottish produce,” said Susan Beattie, head of food & drink at Scottish Development International. “The U.S. is one of the ‘top prospect’ markets in the Scotland Food & Drink export plan and these excellent figures demonstrate this.”

“The Seafood North America Expo in Boston is a key date in our diary,” said Craig Anderson, managing director of The Scottish Salmon Company. “Our involvement in the event enables us to build and develop relationships with new and existing clients, as well as providing the perfect platform to showcase our premium Scottish salmon to the American market.
