Taskforce plans for the future of Young's Seafood in Fraserburgh

A Scottish government-led task force charged with drafting an economic recovery plan for Young’s Seafood and its Fraserburgh facility met for the first time last week.

Although the company plans to keep its Fraserburgh facility – as well as a smokehouse in Grantown on Spey – open following the loss of a major Sainsbury’s salmon contract to Marine Harvest earlier this summer, Young’s still anticipates that some 650 fish processing jobs will be cut.

For the plan, the task force has agreed that the main focus will be on how Young’s can seek new business as well as support its laid-off workforce in finding new opportunities, reported BBC News. The plan will also look at how the company can implement strategies to support sustainable long-term employment in the town, according to the task force, which was chaired by Scottish Business Minister Fergus Ewing during the meeting last week.

Ready-to-eat, hot and cold smoked salmon products will be Fraserburgh’s specialty following its reduction in operations.
