U.N. bans four North Korean ships

Four North Korean ships have been banned from visiting any global port, the United Nations said on 10 October, after they were found violating sanctions against North Korea.

The ships were found “transporting prohibited goods,” according to Hugh Griffiths, coordinator of a U.N. panel on North Korean sanctions, BBC News reported. Griffiths said the move was unprecedented.

The four ships are: Petrel 8, registered in Comoros; Hao Fan 6, flagged in Saint Kitts and Nevis; North Korea-flagged Tong San 2, and Jie Shun., which does not have a flag country listed, according to the MarineTraffic website.

The U.N. Security Council expanded its sanctions against North Korea in September, after the country’s sixth and largest nuclear test. The sanctions include bans on exports of coal, seafood, textiles, and iron ore from North Korea.
