As Americans call for relief in grocery inflation, Walmart and Sam's Club announced “thousands” of lower prices on seafood along with other food and non-food items to help customers save money this summer.
“Customers count on Walmart to deliver the value they need every day, and summer is no exception,” Walmart Executive Vice President and Chief Merchant Julie Barber said. "This summer, we're making even more investments in price, with thousands of Rollbacks across the products customers are shopping for most including beef, fresh produce and beverages, grills, pools, toys, and summer fashion apparel.”
Walmart seafood products that now have lower prices include Great Value frozen shrimp in several sizes and varieties, Great Value Whole Snapper, and Sam’s Choice Ahi Tuna Steaks.
Brands discounted at Walmart include StarKist Tuna Creations, Sea Best Frozen Pink Salmon, and Bernard’s Crawfish Tail.
At Sam’s Club, the retailer is discounting Member’s Mark private label frozen shrimp and Farm Raised Skinless Atlantic Salmon Fillet, along with Safe Catch’s frozen Tuna Burger.
Recognizing Americans’ increasing desire for affordable proteins, Walmart also cut the price for of its ground beef by 12 percent to USD 5.94 (EUR 5.20) per pound. The price of a market basket of nine grocery items including hamburger meat, chips, sodas and paper plates, dropped 25 percent to USD 54.70 (EUR 47.90), Walmart said.
Sam’s Club is also appealing to shoppers looking for a value when they grill, discounting its ground beef, Member’s Mark hot dogs, Member’s Mark Whole Bone-In Pork Back Ribs, and Member’s Mark Bone-In Chicken Wings.
Walmart and Sam’s Club’s price reductions come after a recent survey by the The Kitchen Table Project found that 67 percent of Americans say that the rising cost of living is placing significant pressure on their households – including 49 percent of respondents with annual incomes above USD 100,000 (EUR 87,000).
Groceries are by far the top source of financial pressure, per the May survey. Of those surveyed 63 percent said food is one of their top sources of financial pressure and 67 percent said they pay unfair prices for groceries.
Meat and poultry are respondents’ leading cause of grocery stress and perceived as especially unaffordable, The Kitchen Table Project, a policy pop-up, found. The survey did not address seafood prices.
