Asda commits to fresh sushi

United Kingdom-based grocery chain Asda is committing to bringing fresh sushi to its customers.

Asda said it is partnering with Sushi Daily to open a sushi counter in one of its stores. The retailer did not say whether it will expand the concept to other stores.

Sushi Daily, which operates 600 full-service sushi kiosks throughout Europe, features trained chefs and a “team of sushi artisans” who create sushi in front of shoppers, Asda said in a press release. The open kitchen format offers “a unique experience for Asda shoppers: Freshly made, convenient food with the excitement of watching it being skillfully prepared in front of you,” Asda said.

Shoppers can choose from more than 100 sushi products and order large sharing platters to be freshly made while they shop. There is a broad range of meat, vegetable and fish selections including the Teriyaki Chicken Classic Roll, which starts at GBP 2.00 (USD 2.60, EUR 2.27), and a 20-piece Hachi Menu with four types of sushi for GBP 10.90 (USD 14.16, EUR 12.34).

“We are very excited to collaborate with Asda, bringing their customers a new, engaging experience and delicious, handcrafted sushi – it’s a fantastic opportunity for us all,” Managing Director of Sushi Daily Daniel Coole said.

Asda’s new plan comes soon after Tesco announced that its Tesco Extra stores would feature sushi. Restaurant chain YO! Sushi plans to open manned kiosks in two Tesco Extra stores in the U.K. Shoppers at the two Tesco stores will also be able purchase YO! Sushi products at the front counter of the stores.
