China ag giant piles into aqua feed with 10 new plants

One of the biggest players in China’s pork sector is zoning in on the aquaculture sector for future growth, with plans to add capacity for one million tons of feed for aquauclture.

The Jiangxi Zhengbang Technology Group will build 10 new aquafeed plants over the next three years, bringing its total capacity to three million tons.

A leading producer of pigs and pig feed – it sold 3.42 million pigs in 2017 – Zheng Bang entered the aquafeed sector in 2004.

“We see major growth in aquaculture as China’s aquaculture facilities become more professional,” Yan Quan Gen, head of research and development at the company, said.

Xie Shou Qi at the China Academy of Sciences said China’s per capita seafood consumption will soar by 2050 to 130 million metric tons (MT). By 2030, China will need 81.23 million MT, according to Xie, who was addressing a recent conference of feed producers in Nanchang, China.

“Given that 100 million tons of the production will come from aquaculture we will need 160 million to 210 million tons of feed [for aquaculture] and given that global fishmeal is maximum 60 million tons, we clearly have a big challenge,” Xie said.

The deficit will be made up by three sources: precision technology, new species, and new feed sources, Xie said.
