Marks and Spencer debuts sushi sandwiches, meal kits

Marks and Spencer rolled out sushi sandwiches and new sushi rolls this week, and is piloting meal kits – including seafood options – in some of its stores.

Marks and Spencer’s United Kingdom stores are now offering sushi sandwiches, otherwise known as “onigirazu” in Japan.

“Our new sushi sandwich is changing the way your lunches roll … it’s the perfect at-desk lunch: no chopsticks necessary,” the retailer said on Instagram.

The first two sushi sandwich flavors are Soy and Ginger Chicken; and Chicken, Bacon, and Avocado, both priced at GBP 4.00 (USD 5.18, EUR 4.57) each. Marks and Spencer did not return requests for comment from SeafoodSource, and the retailer did not say in its announcement whether it will eventually add sandwiches containing seafood to the line in the future.

“We really wanted to offer customers even more delicious sushi options with something that no one else on the high street is doing,” Helen Brennan, sandwich developer for Marks and Spencer, told The Mirror. “The sushi sandwich is fantastic for sushi-lovers and those just starting on their sushi journey, as the flavors are so accessible. Could these be the new prawn sandwich? Only time will tell.”

Meanwhile, the retailer is testing “In the Bag” meal kits in six stores, with different meal options include beef, chicken, fish, and vegetarian, The Grocer reported.

Marks and Spencer also released two new sushi rolls: The Firecracker Prawn Dragon Roll, with spicy mayonnaise, onions and chives; and the Katsu Chicken Dragon Roll, with curry mayonnaise, onions and chives, Mirror reported.

The rolls are also priced at GBP 4.00 (USD 5.18, EUR 4.57) each.
