Vega Salmon adopts new skin packaging system for hot-smoked products

Denmark-based seafood processor Vega Salmon A/S has adopted packaging developer Sealpac's latest skin packaging innovation, FlatSkin, for its hot-smoked salmon products. The skin packaging system ensures significantly longer shelf life and reduces plastic use by up to 75 percent, according to Sealpac.

Common plastic trays are replaced with cardboard carriers for the FlatSkin system, and a transparent barrier skin film is used to fixate products to the carboard base, which is coated with a polymeric protective layer. This layer of polymeric protection forms “a reliable barrier against grease, moisture, and oxygen,” Sealpac said in a press release.

Products housed in a FlatSkin package are well-suited for vertical presentation, either handing or standing, with the cardboard carriers — made from bleached or unbleached fiber – capable of being branded on both sides thanks to double-sided printing with low-migration printing inks and varnishes. Moreover, FlatSkin’s tight-fitting film promotes a 3D visual effect for the product being showcased, a technique that “highlights the content to the fullest,” Sealpac said.

Vega Salmon has become one of the first users of the FlatSkin packaging system for its hot-smoked salmon products, which it supplies under different brand names to several retailers in Denmark.

“The [Vega Salmon] products are manufactured on a Sealpac A10 traysealer with eight-impression tooling for cardboard carriers measuring 260 by 130 millimeters. Each carrier has a double-sided print and hanger hole, which, combined with Sealpac's unique OnTrayCut system, allow for an attractive vertical presentation at retail,” Sealpac said.

The market for packaging systems like FlatSkin is booming, according to Sealpac.

“These days, more and more skin packs are conquering the retail shelves around the world. The advantages of the skin packaging system are obvious: securely sealed under deep vacuum, food products have a significantly longer shelf life and can be presented in a much more attractive way,” the packager said.
