EU salmon sales drive Norwegian seafood exports

Norway last month exported 276,000 metric tons (MT) of fisheries and aquaculture products worth a total NOK 9.9 billion (USD 1.2 billion, EUR 1 billion) to overseas markets. While the shipped volume was eight percent lower than in November 2017, the value was 11 percent or NOK 990 million (USD 116.4 million, EUR 102.5 million) higher.

Throughout the first 11 months of this year, Norwegian exporters sold 2.5 million MT of products with a value of NOK 90.7 billion (USD 10.7 billion, EUR 9.4 billion), representing five percent year-on-year increases in volume and value. 

Farmed salmon exports have continued to lead the growth in overall trade, with last month’s sales totaling 101,000 MT worth NOK 6.2 billion (USD 729.2 million, EUR 642.3 million). While this volume was on par with November 2016, the value was 10 percent, or NOK 541 million (USD 63.6 million, EUR 56 million) more.

The average price for whole fresh salmon in November was NOK 56.24 (USD 6.61, EUR 5.83) per kilogram against NOK 50.49 (USD 5.94, EUR 5.23) a year previously. Poland and France provided the main markets for the product last month.

So far this year, Norway has exported 962,000 MT of salmon for NOK 62 billion (USD 7.3 billion, EUR 6.4 billion), representing year-on-year volume and value growths of six percent and five percent, respectively.

"The E.U. is winning the battle for Norwegian salmon, and we are still seeing rising demand in the E.U. market. In November, nearly 78,000 MT of salmon [was] exported to the E.U. with a value of NOK 4.5 billion (USD 529.2 million, EUR 466.2 million). This represented a volume growth of 4.5 percent, while [the] growth in value was 12 percent,” said Paul Aandahl, seafood analyst with the Norwegian Seafood Council (NSC). 

The country also exported 5,300 MT of trout for NOK 322 million (USD 37.9 million, EUR 33.4 million) last month, contributing to 11-month totals of 41,500 MT and NOK 2.7 billion (USD 317.6 million, EUR 279.7 million), which represents a volume increase of 18 percent and a value increase of five percent from the same period of last year.

To date, Norway has also exported 61,500 MT of fresh cod products worth NOK 2.2 billion (USD 258.8 million, EUR 227.9 million. While this volume represents a decrease of five percent year-on-year, the value is up 2 percent.

It has also shipped 64,000 MT of frozen cod worth NOK 2.4 billion (USD 282.3 million, EUR 248.7 million), with the volume decreasing by 15 percent but the value staying on par with 2017.

In the pelagic sector, 262,000 MT of herring worth NOK 2.4 billion and 236,000 MT of mackerel valued at NOK 3.5 billion (USD 411.7 million, EUR 362.7 million) have been exported by Norway over the past 11 months.

Meanwhile, the country’s shellfish exporters have sold 1,900 MT of king crab valued at NOK 548 million (USD 64.5 million, EUR 56.8 million) and 10,100 MT of shrimp worth NOK 775 million (USD 91.2 million, EUR 80.3 million).
