One of China’s wealthiest cities has been diversifying its seafood supply sources, with Ireland and Spain emerging as key suppliers, especially for crayfish and crab.
According to customs authorities in Wenzhou, on China’s east coast, the city recorded a 195.7-percent increase in volume of seafood imports in the first 11 months of 2017, reaching a total volume of 385.3 tons for the period.
In recent years, Wenzhou has been allowed to process seafood imports, an honor hitherto held by a tiny handful of ports including Shanghai. Long a locus of manufacturing and trading, Wenzhou is home to some of China’s wealthiest privately-owned businesses.
Crayfish and “golden brown crab” from Ireland as well as “deep-sea crayfish” from New Zealand are listed among the leading items coming into the city’s port.
