As all countries in the region, Indonesian farmers have been negatively affected by the global shrimp price slump. As a result, farmers are currently hesitant to stock their ponds and it is not yet clear how production volumes for the rest of the year will develop.
ShrimpTails sources in Indonesia expect that country-wide production will be flat or show a slight decrease compared to the first half of 2018. Exports to the U.S. broke records in the first quarter of the year, reaching 33,000 tonnes compared to 29,000 tonnes in the first quarter of 2017. This is in line with expectations regarding Indonesia’s position in the U.S. market, especially now that Vietnamese exporters are practically out of business in the U.S. due to high anti-dumping duties.
