China’s canners had a good year in 2017

Chinese canned food sales rose 4.06 percent in volume and 4.91 percent in value in the first 10 months of 2017 over the same period of time in 2016, according to the China Canned Food Association.

The data was based on a survey of China’s 888 largest canning companies, and shows production at 10.2 million tons in the first 10 months, with value at CNY 14 billion (USD 2.2 billion, EUR 1.8 billion).

One of the firms looking to increase its export sales is Guangdong Haibao Canned Food Co., which has a large presence in Chinas as well and an export reach to customers in Africa and the Middle East. The company sells a "Yu Jia Xiang" branded range that includes dace fish with salted black beans, as well as canned eel, anchovies, tuna, and sardines. Haibao is currently promoting a Chinese New Year sales drive, selling its 180-gram tins of tuna at a special CNY 40 (USD 6.35, EUR 5.08) for five cans.

Other companies looking to up their sales, particularly overseas, include Shanghai Maling Food Co., and Zhanjiang Huanlejia Food Co., also based in Guangdong Province.

Shanghai Maling runs canneries in Rongcheng, a major seafood processing hub in Shandong Province, and sells canned tuna and sardines under its “Maling” brand. Zhanjiang Huanlejia  sells “Huanlejia” branded canned dace and anchovies.
