Logistics snags blight Chinese seafood sector in New Year rush period

A cocktail of logistics problems is bedevilling China’s fish-farming sector in the run up to Chinese New Year, with a shutdown of highways and routes in key central provinces which have been log jammed recently by snow storms and traffic jams lasting for days.

Logistics firms are being encouraged to stop work for several weeks in the run-up to and directly after the New Year holiday as authorities get ready for the annual rush of migrants returning home to the countryside from their jobs in China’s cities. This is posing significant challenges to caterers and retailers in northern China, which rely on trucking from southern region for supplies of live fish and shrimp during winter months.

The list of logistics firms affected by the government decree and published by the Ministry of Transport includes firms that transport both live fish and fish feed.
