Prices for Norwegian farmed salmon maintain record level

While prices for Norway’s farmed Atlantic salmon have fallen since the start of the year – from an average of NOK 72.42 (USD 8.60, EUR 7.67) per kg of fresh fish in the second week of January to NOK 66.02 (USD 7.84, EUR 7) per kg in the first week of June – this latest price was nevertheless 14 percent higher than in corresponding week of last year and 74 percent more than in 2015.

With supplies remaining very tight, future prices of 3 to 6 kg fish will continue to be high over the coming months, with analysts now expecting them to be at levels of around NOK 67.50 (USD 8.02, EUR 7.15) per kg this month, and then falling to NOK 65.40 (USD 7.77, EUR 6.93) in July and then NOK 60.20 (USD 7.15, EUR 6.38) in August.

The average FOB price at Norwegian Customs for fresh salmon so far this year is NOK 66.21 (USD 7.86, EUR 7.01) per kg, up 15 percent year-on-year, and 60 percent more than at the same stage of 2015.

The average price of frozen salmon exports, meanwhile, was NOK 67.70 (USD 8.04, EUR 7.17) per kg, up 31 percent compared with the same period of last year and 52 percent more than in 2015. 

According to Norwegian Statistics, the country had exported 319,896 metric tons (MT) of fresh salmon – down 3 percent year-on-year, and 9,641 MT of frozen salmon (down 12 percent) by the first week of June.
