Norway and Russia have reached an agreement on the Barents Sea fisheries quotas for 2019, the Norwegian Fisheries Ministry has confirmed.
The total quota for northeast arctic cod for 2019 has been set at 725,000 metric tons (MT), down from 775,000 MT in 2018. Of this, Norway’s share will be 328,697 MT, including 21,000 MT of coastal cod and 7,000 MT of research catch.
At the same time, the 2019 total quota for haddock was set at 172,000 MT, down from 200,000 MT this year, with Norway’s quota amounting to 85,080 MT including the research quota.
The agreement was signed in Ålesund, Norway, by negotiations leaders Ilja Sjestakov (Russia) and Arne Benjaminsen (Norway).
"After another round of constructive and good fisheries negotiations with Russia, I am pleased that we have reached an agreement for 2019, which means we can still harvest sustainably from our common fisheries resources in the Barents Sea," commented Harald Nesvik, Norway’s fisheries minister.
