Pangasius export earnings rise for Vietnam

Vietnam’s pangasius exports achieved a total value of USD 1 billion (EUR 847.5 million) in the first seven months of this year, representing an increase of 8.2 percent year-on-year with increased earnings from the U.S. and Chinese markets in particular.

According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), the Southeast Asian country shipped USD 220.8 million (EUR 187.1 million) worth of pangasius to the United States in the January through July period, which was 3.3 percent more than in the corresponding seven months of 2016. In the same period, its pangasius exports to China-Hong Kong totaled USD 206.1 million (EUR 174.7 million), up 46.2 percent year-on-year.

VASEP also highlighted strong growth in the pangasius sector’s earnings from Brazil (59.3 percent), Mexico (25.7 percent), Colombia (8.9 percent) and Saudi Arabia (6 percent). However, the association acknowledged that the “sharp decline” in demand from the EU over the last three years has forced Vietnamese pangasius companies to shift their products to other potential importing markets.

Last year, Vietnam’s pangasius exports to the EU fell to a total value of USD 261.1 million (EUR 221.3 million).
