Bangladesh upping loach production for Chinese market

Bangladesh could become an offshore production base for one of China’s most in-demand species, loach, following a recent exchange of expertise between the two countries.

A Bangladeshi delegation recently traveled to China’s Fujian Province for a government-funded training session. The delegation of 30 officials and aquaculture executives studied water quality, aeration techniques, and disease control at the Fujian Academy of Fisheries.

China will continue to share aquaculture technology and training with Bangladesh, said Xue Lingzhan, special commissioner of the Fujian Academy of Fisheries.

Loach is a popular fish in China, where it’s in demand for high-volume users such as hot pot restaurant chains.

Bangladesh, like Pakistan, has long been embraced by China as a political ally and receives a significant amount of monetary aid. Both countries, in particular Bangladesh, have also been destinations for Chinese manufacturing firms seeking to outsource production of garment making and other labor-intensive but lower-value manufacturing activities.
