Lunds/Byerly’s commits to BAP standards

Add Lunds and Byerly’s to the list of retailers that have committed to selling farmed seafood certified according to the Global Aquaculture Alliance’s (GAA) Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP).

The GAA announced on Friday that the upscale, family-owned retailer, which operates 21 stores under the Lunds and Byerly’s banners in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, has pledged to work with its suppliers to achieve compliance with the BAP standards.

Lunds and Byerly’s is rolling out an “aggressive” marketing campaign with the launch of its Responsibly Sourced Seafood Program on Thursday.

“We realize that sustainable seafood choices are important to our consumers,” said Bea James, senior manager of organic, natural and sustainable programs at Lunds and Byerly’s. “We are committed to developing a program that helps educate our customers about how well-managed sustainable aquaculture can help reverse the global seafood crisis.”

Added Peter Redmond, the GAA’s VP of global market development, “Our BAP standards program is a manifestation of how the marketplace can make a positive difference on a global scale. The growth of sustainable aquaculture is at the heart of GAA, and every endorsement of our standards gives us increased comfort with the future of aquaculture. We are proud to welcome the efforts put forth by Lunds and Byerly’s. The depth of their Responsibly Sourced Seafood Program will put them in a true leadership position with their customers.”
