New funding for Spanish aquaculture

Reiterating its commitment to provide EUR 256 million (USD 381 million) from the general state budget for the seven-year period between 2007 and 2013, Spain's Ministry of Agriculture, Rural & Marine Affairs this week renewed its support for the country's aquaculture industry, with help from the European Fisheries Fund.

Amounting to EUR 1 million (USD 1.5 million), this new funding represents a revised estimate of transfers made by Spain's Directorate General of Fisheries Management for the period of 2010 to 2014, bringing the total allocation for Spain's aquaculture industry to EUR 2.9 million (USD 4.3 million) for 2009.

Projects to receive funding include clam and mussel cultivation, octopus fattening, mollusk determination and comparison, improving quality in seafood processing, health management and marketing.

Nine autonomous regions will benefit from this new funding, with Galicia, Catalonia and Andalucia netting the largest share.
