Green MP Steffan Browning’s stance on New Zealand King Salmon’s operations flew in the face of economic progress for Marlborough and the people he represents, the company said yesterday.
NZ King Salmon chief executive Grant Rosewarne said the irony about Mr. Browning’s stand was that New Zealand King Salmon shared much common ground with the Green Party because environmental integrity was a cornerstone of its operation and essential to the nurturing of its salmon.
“However, unlike Mr. Browning, we support sustainable aquaculture as a means of creating wealth, employment and reputation for New Zealand and we do this in balance with the environment.”
Mr. Browning, who was elected last year through the Green Party’s list vote, was highly critical of NZ King Salmon and its ownership in his maiden speech in Parliament on Wednesday.
Mr Rosewarne said Mr. Browning was wrong on the ownership of NZ King Salmon. It was not owned directly by the Tiong Group, but was governed under a joint venture arrangement between Evergreen (formerly Oregon) and NZ-owned Direct Capital.
