Samherji’s European chief to step down

Samherji Holding, a company affiliated with Icelandic seafood company Samherji, has announced that Haraldur Grétarsson will leave his position leading its European operations in early April. He will continue to work as an advisor to Samherji for the remainder of this year.

Originally from Reykjavik, Grétarsson has worked for Samherji and its connected companies since 1992. He has held the position of managing director of the Deutsche Fischfang Union (DFFU) in Cuxhaven, one of Germany's oldest fisheries companies, and has served on the boards of several seafood companies.

Grétarsson said it was time for a change after almost three decades with the company, and a large part of that period spent overseas, having moved to Scotland with his family in 1998.

"When we moved to Scotland at the end of the last century and started working for Onward Fishing in Aberdeen, we had no idea about the journey that we were about to begin,” he said. “During this time, we have gotten to know many people and worked with talented colleagues who have contributed to the fantastic results that have been achieved during the period. We are thankful for that, and we wish our colleagues all the best for the future.”

Baldvin Thorsteinsson has been appointed as Grétarsson’s successor and will be based in the Netherlands.

In regard to these changes, routine organizational adjustments will be made in the near future, Samherji Holding said.
