Dsm-firmenich Animal Nutrition & Health has launched an update to its “Digital SalmoFan” designed specifically for trout fillet color.
The company’s Digital SalmoFan is a portable device that measures the color of salmon and trout, based on the widely used SalmoFan color management tools developed by the company. The SalmoFan gives the ability to rate the color of a salmon fillet on a numeric scale and has been widely used by the aquaculture and processing industries.
The Digital SalmoFan is an electronic version of the device, which dsm-firmenich said allows users to objectively measure color in a way that isn’t affected by an individual’s color perception. The new update to the software builds on the existing technology, and the company said it allows users to accurately measure trout fillet color using a new algorithm.

The company said the new software allows users to select between different salmon and trout species, allowing companies to quickly measure color without any light interference. Dsm-firmenich said the technology has been gaining traction in the salmon and trout industry with feed producers, farmers, processors, and research institutions utilizing the tool.
