Certification body Intertek Moody Marine on Wednesday released a public comment draft report determining the majority of Alaska’s wild salmon fishery continues to meet the Marine Stewardship Council sustainability requirements.
Thirteen of the 14 fishing areas met the MSC standard with high overall scores, with IMM recommending those 13 areas obtain MSC certification. The assessment team concluded that addition information is needed to conduct the assessment of the 14th area — Prince William Sound — that will remain in assessment.
Six conditions were placed on the certification of the 13 areas that can proceed through the assessment process — most of which would need to be met within four to five years upon recertification.
The Alaska salmon fishery was first certified by the MSC in 2000 and recertified in 2007. The Purse Seine Vessel Owners Association is acting at the client for the current recertification.
