Bristol Seafood gifts thousands to further marine economy research

Bristol Seafood, a seafood processor and distributor based out of Southern Maine, has gifted USD 10,000 (EUR 8,767) to the Center for Excellence in the Marine Sciences at the University of New England to further study in areas of ocean science and conservation.

“We are pleased to have an opportunity to support the Center for Excellence in the Marine Sciences as it continues to help its students in the areas of ocean studies, marine conservation and restoration, marine entrepreneurship, and sustainable aquaculture and fisheries,” said Bristol President and CEO Peter Handy in a prepared statement.

“We are so grateful for this gift from Bristol and its partners,” added Barry Costa-Pierce, director of the Center for Excellence in the Marine Sciences at UNE. “These funds will be instrumental in helping our talented faculty, staff and students continue the research that will expand the marine economy both in Maine and around the globe.”

With a facility located on the pier in Portland, Maine U.S.A., Bristol was able to ship more than six million pounds of seafood in 2015. The company is the first in the state of Maine processing mussels, scallops, and fillets to earn a Safe Quality Food Institute certification.
