Toralla earns Friend of the Sea certification

Chile-based mussel farmer and processor Toralla on Thursday announced it received Friend of the Sea sustainability certification.

Toralla owns more than 250 hectares of sea, using longline culture to harvest 12,000 metric tons of rope-grown mussels annually, which it exports to Spain, Italy, Greece, England, France, Belgium and the United States, among other markets.

All the company's farming sites underwent environmental impact assessments and the Chilean sanitary authority, Sernapesca, regularly monitors the waters. Toralla also periodically cleans the seabed under the lines, and its equipment undergoes regular maintenance.

Toralla also follows a strict energy reduction plan and complies with critical point control and quality assurance (HACCP and PAC) regulations.

"Friend of the Sea certification is becoming the international standard for seafood sustainability and provides a clear and positive message to consumers," said Sergio Leiro, Toralla general manager. "We also appreciate Friend of the Sea support of mussels production as being the most environmentally friendly way to produce proteins from seafood."
