Update: Findus wins environment award

Young’s Seafood’s Fish for Life program on Wednesday won the grand prize in the management category of the European Business Awards for the Environment.

The program, the only British entry out of 11 to reach the finals, beat out two other entries from Austria and Turkey to capture the grand prize. The award was presented during the annual Green Week conference in Brussels, Belgium.

The Fish for Life program was launched in 2006 in response to the need to protect fish stocks and the marine environment. The program encompasses detailed criteria and a stringent assessment process to ensure that all fish used by Young’s is responsibly sourced. The Fish for Life logo appears on all Young’s packaging.

“This is fantastic recognition for Fish for Life which places it amongst the very best environmental initiatives in Europe,” said Chris Britton, CEO of the Findus Group, which owns Young’s. “Being declared a winner underlines the point that Fish for Life is much more than just a consumer label for our products, it is a committed and multi-faceted program intended to support genuine improvement in fish sustainability.”

The biennial European Business Awards for the Environment is sponsored by the European Commission and honor European enterprises that “spur economic growth by contributing to innovation and competitiveness, while also protecting the environment.” The winners were selected from 141 entries from 24 EU member states, the highest number of entries since the European Business Awards for the Environment were launched in 1987.
