Vessel seized after AP seafood slavery investigation

The Associated Press’ ongoing investigation into human slavery in the seafood industry in Southeast Asia has led to a cargo vessel being impounded by authorities in Indonesia.

The AP has reported the Indonesian navy has impounded the Silver Sea 2, a refrigerated cargo vessel, a ship it had been watching. The AP investigation included photographs taken last month of the vessel with two fishing boats offloading cargo into it. The AP found the fishing boats had been using forced labor, and used satellite tracking to keep tabs on the Silver Sea 2.

The AP published its first report on the issue in March of this year, connecting seafood produced by human trafficking to a number of major seafood importers and distributors in Thailand, the EU and the United States.
