Gorton’s rolls out gluten-free fish fillets

Gorton’s Seafood on Thursday announced that its line of grilled fish fillets is now gluten free.

The line — one of the frozen-seafood brand’s best-selling lines — consists of Grilled Salmon, Grilled Tilapia, Grilled Haddock and All Natural Grilled Fillets (made with Alaska pollock).

Like a growing number of seafood producers, Gorton’s is trying to reach the one in 133 Americans who, according to the Celiac Disease Foundation, live with celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder of the small intestine triggered by a reaction to gluten. Gluten is found in the wheat flour used to make breading for fish fillets and other products.

“We understand that gluten free diets can be very challenging for consumers who suffer from celiac disease or the spectrum of gluten intolerance. Even beyond consumers with strict medical conditions, gluten free diets are growing in popularity,” said Zach Soolman, director of consumer marketing for Gorton’s. “But the choices of meal solutions that are not only gluten free, but also tasty and convenient, are still fairly limited.”

Gorton’s implemented procedures at the production level to avoid the risk of cross-contamination, and there is ongoing monitoring and testing to ensure that Gorton’s Grilled Fish is gluten free, said the company

To promote the launch of its gluten-free grilled fish fillets, Gorton’s has posted several gluten-free recipes on its website, is offering downloadable coupons and is giving away 100 subscriptions to Living Without, a magazine geared toward people with celiac disease.

Based in Gloucester, Mass., Gorton’s is owned by Nissui, one of Japan’s largest seafood companies.
