Corbion’s AlgaPrime DHA earns honorable mention from Fast Company

Corbion announced on 28 April that its AlgaPrime DHA product was named an honorable mention in the food category of Fast Company’s “2020 World Changing Ideas Award.”

AlgaPrime DHA is an algae-based source of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, used as a primary ingredient in fish feed. The company has thus far successfully trialed the product in Thai Union shrimp feed, and the company was recently awarded a contract with Bergen, Norway-based Salmon Group.

Fast Company awards its “World Changing Ideas Award” to products, concepts, companies, and policies that “are pursuing innovation for the good of society and the planet,” according to the company’s website. The awards are handed out by a panel of judges that select from more than 3,000 entries across the world in a number of categories.

The award “is the latest in a series of milestones,” according to a release by Corbion, and is a sign that the company’s work is starting to pay off.

"It can take years for the adoption of a novel ingredient to gain critical mass, and a key aspect of AlgaPrime DHA's success has come from our collaboration with salmon farmers and BioMar, the leading innovator in aquaculture feed," Corbion Global Aquaculture Lead Chris Haacke said in the release. "Adopting such a new ingredient took real courage and a great deal of effort to ensure success. Over the past year, we've seen a tipping point in adoption to meet the growing demand for more sustainable and nutritious seafood at every point in the supply chain."
