Thai Union has chosen to expand the inclusion of algal oil produced by global ingredient developer Corbion into its shrimp feeds, Thai Union said in a statement on 12 October.
The move followed successful large-scale trials of AlgaPrime DHA in shrimp feed conducted last year.
AlgaPrime DHA is “globally recognized for improving omega-3 traceability and reducing the fish-in fish-out ratio of farmed seafood,” Corbion said in June 2019.
According to the Thai Union, AlgaPrime DHA is a clean and sustainable ingredient, produced through fermentation with non-GM cane sugar as a feedstock. The use of the ingredient will help relieve pressure on marine resources and facilitate the growth and development of shrimp.
The omega-3 DHA contained in AlgaPrime DHA is two times higher than the omega-3s found in common fish oils, Corbion said.
Thai Union said the adoption of AlgaPrime DHA into its feeds goes in line with its SeaChange sustainability strategy, which brings about improvements across its seafood supply chain.
“Our expanded work with Corbion progresses our goals on responsible sourcing by making efficient use of marine resources in aquaculture feed and complementing this with the use of alternative oils and proteins. The work with Corbion is helping to provide feed solutions that support optimal nutrition, consistency and supply chain transparency for our network of shrimp farmers,” Thai Union’s Global Director of Corporate Affairs and Sustainability Darian McBain said.
Corbion has been producing AlgaPrime DHA since 2016. It established the fish oil alternative/supplement with the aim of reducing dependency on marine fisheries and providing a new source of long-chain omega-3s for the aquaculture industry.
“AlgaPrime DHA is positioned to change the landscape of the fast-growing sustainable shrimp aquaculture industry by offering a proven solution to farmers and seafood producers,” Corbion’s Global Aquaculture Lead Chris Haacke said.
