Bakkafrost sees reduced Q2 salmon harvests, higher feed sales

The total volume of Atlantic salmon harvested in the Faroe Islands in Q2 2022 by Bakkafrost Group decreased by 4,500 metric tons (MT) compared with Q2 2021 to 13,100 MT of head-on gutted (HOG) weight fish.

According to the Glyvrar, Faroe Islands-based group’s latest trading update, its Farming West operations contributed 3,100 MT of this total, Farming North 4,800 MT, and Farming South 5,200 MT. A year previously, these harvests were 13,200 MT 2,500 MT, and 1,900 MT, respectively.

Also in Q2 2022, Bakkafrost’s Scottish operations harvested 6,600 MT, down 4,000 MT from Q2 2021.

The group’s feed sales for the last quarter totaled 31,200 MT, up 4,000 MT from the corresponding period of last year. Havsbrún sourced 97,600 MT of raw materials in Q2 2022.

Bakkafrost harvested 97,900 MT of salmon in 2021, up from 86,700 MT in 2020. Of that total, 67,200 MT was produced in the Faroes, and 29,700 MT was grown in Scotland.

Bakkafrost has forecast a 2022 harvest of 103,000 MT gutted-weight salmon, with 68,000 MT coming from the Faroe Islands and 35,000 MT from Scotland. It also expects to release around 14.9 million smolts of around 500 grams each in 2022 in the Faroe Islands, and 10.8 million smolts of around 120 grams each in Scotland. 

The group produced 34,962 MT of fishmeal and 8,124 MT of fish oil last year. It expects its 2022 fishmeal and fish oil production to be on par with last year, while Havsbrún’s sales of fish feed is expected to reach 130,000 MT.

In June 2022, the Scottish Salmon Company announced it would be renaming its operations to Bakkafrost Scotland. Bakkafrost purchased a majority stake in the producer in 2019.
