Reduced salmon harvest, increased feed sales for Bakkafrost’s third quarter

Bakkafrost Group harvested 11,100 metric tons (MT) of head-on gutted (HOG) weight Atlantic salmon in the third quarter of this year, which represented a decrease of 1,800 MT from the corresponding period of 2019.

According to the company’s latest trading update, the contribution to the total from its farming operations in the north of the Faroes amounted to 5,300 MT, while farms in the west and south supplied 4,700 MT and 1,100 MT respectively.

For the same three months, its subsidiary, the Scottish Salmon Company (SSC) achieved a harvest of 10,500 MT. Bakkafrost acquired its majority stake in SSC in October 2019.

Also in the last quarter, Bakkafrost sold 39,900 MT of feed, an increase of 6,000 MT year-on-year. Its fish feed business Havsbrún sourced 24,300 MT of raw materials in the three-month period.

Its full third-quarter 2020 report will be released on 10 November.

In 2019, Bakkafrost harvested 65,109 MT of salmon, with 57,184 MT coming from the Faroes. At the same time, with 60 sites across the Scottish west coast and Hebridean Islands, SSC produced 33,799 MT.

Following the loss of around 1.2 million fish in a severe storm in February this year, the group has projected the full-year 2020 harvest in the Faroes to be around 50,000 MT HOG salmon. The harvest from its Scottish operations is expected to increase to 39,000 MT.

Bakkafrost further expects its Faroese harvest volumes to reach 62,500 MT in 2021, while Scotland is projected to produce 44,000 MT.

Depending on external sales, Bakkaforst also anticipates Havsbrún will sell some 110,000 MT of fish feed this year.
